Best Original Songs

by Luke Parker | May 21st, 2020 | vol.2

Most of the songs written about Bitcoin to date have been parodies of popular songs, including the tracks featured in last month’s issue. While creating a parody frees up artists to focus more on the specific lyrics, the artistry of the music itself is often overlooked, and parodies are not seen as ‘serious works’ in the eyes of the masses.

This month’s volume is focused on those best original works, where the artists wrote and performed the music, while creating a Bitcoin-themed masterpiece.

CRYPTOCURRENCY

13inlet’s Jan 2014 ukulele-backed ditty, simply called “Cryptocurrency” was one of the first Bitcoin originals to incite musical satisfaction. The artful composition is overall very melodic, and the more you listen to it, the more you come to appreciate both his musical skill and the metaphors used in the lyrics.

BITCOIN BARON

Rap is easily the largest category of Bitcoin music, although the majority of Bitcoin rap songs seem to exist only to brag about riches, bitches, and lambos. YTCracker’s epic August 2014 “Bitcoin Baron” was, and still is, pretty unique; it focused on the elite, nerdy lifestyle of being a Bitcoiner, instead of just the bling-bling. This addictive track has since been played at the opening of countless podcasts and in dozens of documentaries about Bitcoin, making it one of the all-time most popular Bitcoin songs to date.

There must have been something in the water that year, since these were among 20 Bitcoin-only songs on Youtube. Toby Gagner also released his popular original “Welcome to the Blockchain” in November 2014. Only the year 2018 saw more Bitcoin songs released before or since.

THE BITCOIN SONG

In more recent history, the best original song in the last year would have to be CryptoContagion’s August 2019 “The Bitcoin Song”. Despite the unoriginal name (shared by over 20 other videos on youtube), this track combines an original style with a catchy tune, bold guitar riffs, and lots of good advice for novice Bitcoiners. The visuals are striking in the video as well, but the song is sure to be one of your new favorites on your portable music player.

In the next issue we’ll look into the Bitcoin songs with the largest production value, but before then, don’t forget to enjoy Bitcoin Pizza Day on the 22nd!
